Abstract: Although Robert Service (1874-1958) was born in England and lived in Canada much of his life, his poems, often relating color adventures set in mining camps and saloons in the Yukon, seem as American in spirit as the novels of Jack London. For most of the 20th century he has been one of American's most widely read poets. Dan McGrew, 'the lady that's known as Lou' and the boys who 'were whooping it up in the Malamute saloon' are part of our culture, and poems like 'The Spell of the Yukon,' ' The Heart of the Sourdough,' 'While the Bannock Bakes' and 'The Squaw Man' are longtime favorites for readers everywhere. This collection of Robert Service poems was selected from our of his most popular volumes of verse - 'The Spell of Yukon and Other Verses' (1907), 'Balads of a Cheechako' (1909), 'Rhymes of a Roling Stone' (1912) and 'Rhymes of a Red Cross Man' (1916).
