Abstract: Ghosts have always haunted literature and Fitz James O'Brien's What Was It? is an example of this kind. Ghosts have always been an important place in literature and the short story by Fitz James O'Brien, What was it? is one example. One night an invisible entity attacks the narrator. The nature of that Thing is unknown and it seems untouchable, yet the struggle between them is intense. Although the creature is invisible, the narrator feels its breath, its force that is about to overwhelm him and maybe, without apparent justification, it will brutally deprives him of his life ... But what was it?
