Abstract: Il romanzo La signora Dalloway, pubblicato nel 1925 e ambientato nel ’23, si svolge a Westminster, nel cuore di Londra: in una mattina di sole la signora Dalloway esce a comprare dei fiori per la festa che si terrà la sera stessa a casa sua, da qui la giornata si svolge come un giorno qualsiasi: riceve una visita, vede il marito, si riposa, parla con la figlia, accoglie gli ospiti alla festa. Non ci sono colpi di scena, vengono narrate le azioni minime svolte nella quotidianità, in un momento che potrebbe essere mille altri. L’automatismo dei gesti compiuti dalla signora Dalloway, in quella che potrebbe essere definita “vita di superficie”, permette a Virginia Woolf di creare lo spazio per un tempo doppio, una doppia vita: grazie alla ripetitività delle azioni, la signora Dalloway può immergersi in pensieri e ricordi che si sovrappongono alla routine e che raccontano la sua storia, modificando e trasformando l’ordinarietà di sottofondo, perché, in fin dei conti, per raccontare una vita basta una giornata.
