Per quanto sia tenuto sotto controllo da telecamere, Smith comincia a condurre un'esistenza "sovversiva". Scritto nel 1949, il libro è considerato una delle più lucide rappresentazioni del totalitarismo.

Abstract: Il poema che Carroll scrisse alcuni anni dopo Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, è un esempio grandissimo del nonsense di questo genio inglese. Il nonsense nasce qui addirittura prima del racconto: lo snualo è uno snark, una parola composta da shark (pescecane) e snake (serpente), un mostro sconosciuto che viene cercato da un bizzarro equipaggio costituito da un banditore, un lustrascarpe, un inventore di cappelli, un avvocato, un sensale, un segnapunti di biliardo, un banchiere, un fornaio famoso per il numero di cose che dimentica quando entra nella nave, un macellaio e un castoro. Alcuni studiosi hanno interpretato La caccia allo Snualo come un'allegoria della ricerca del Santo Graal, altri come una metafora dello scontro fra i partiti dei Whig e dei Tory, altri ancora come una perfida satira contro gli arrampicatori sociali o il mondo degli affari dell'Inghilterra guidata come un severissimo college dal rettore Regina Vittoria. Oggi possiamo leggere questo divertentissimo testo, qui ritradotto con cura in una nuova edizione con testo a fronte, come un semplice canto di allegra e profonda intelligenza.
