Del resto, non è vero, anche se è stato spesso ripetuto, che Wilde scrisse Salomè pensando a Sarah Bernhardt: era Alfred Douglas la persona che aveva ispirato la sua concezione del personaggio. Wilde scrisse l'opera originariamente in francese, per poi assistere e aiutare Douglas nella sua traduzione inglese. In quest'edizione sono presentate entrambe le versioni dell'opera.
