Una idea può essere buona o cattiva, anzi un'idea è in partenza provvisoriamente buona e cattiva. Risulterà essere più buona che cattiva, più cattiva che buona a seconda dell'esecuzione. Ora l'esecuzione di Jean Rhys è straordinaria, un romanzo avvelenato di fascino, squilibrato di passioni, condannato e riscattato dalla magia... Scacciata dal suo paradiso di Coulibri, Antoinette affronta un tragico e tumultuoso destino d'amore e follia proprio perché di tale tragicità e tumultuosità è convinta lei per prima. O, facciamo, per seconda. Per prima ne è convinta Jean Rhys che con mano implacabile e delicata, complice e spietata sospinge la sua eroina a bruciare e consumarsi nello straordinario romanzo che è II grande mare dei sargassi sino a ridursi all'ombra labile e confusa di un personaggio minore dello straordinario romanzo che è Jane Eyre di Charlotte Bronté.
