Abstract: Kent, Gran Bretagna. In una tranquilla e lussuosa casa di riposo quattro improbabili amici si incontrano una volta alla settimana per indagare sui casi di omicidi irrisolti. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim e Ron, tra calici di vino e torte alla vodka, studiano i fascicoli della polizia segretamente acquisiti dalla leader indiscussa del gruppo, Elizabeth. Sono persone vivaci, straordinariamente agili ed energiche, decise a esercitare la loro notevole elasticità mentale nella ricerca di un assassino a piede libero. Per trovarlo si immedesimeranno nel personaggio dell'anziano curioso e vagamente ingenuo, così da raccogliere informazioni e inserirsi nelle indagini ufficiali con stratagemmi sorprendenti, che superano spesso il confine della legalità.

Abstract: Un bambino sogna a occhi aperti e immagina di far sparire l'intera famiglia, un po' per noia e un po' per dispetto, con un'immaginaria Pomata Svanilina; oppure sogna di poter togliere al gatto di casa la pelliccia, di farne uscire l'anima felina e di prenderne il posto, vivendone per qualche giorno la vita, soltanto in apparenza sonnacchiosa; oppure sogna che le bambole della sorella si animino e lo aggrediscano per scacciarlo dalla sua camera... Fin dalle prime pagine di questo libro ritroviamo il consueto campionario di immagini perturbanti che sono un po' il marchio di fabbrica di McEwan. Specialmente nella prima stagione della sua narrativa l'autore britannico ci aveva abituato a profondi e terribili scandagli nel microcosmo della famiglia, e in quei mondi chiusi e violenti i bambini e gli adolescenti giocavano sia il ruolo delle vittime e sia quello dei carnefici. Ne I'inventore di sogni McEwan ritorna sul luogo del delitto, ma lo fa con un tono e uno spirito completamente diversi, scegliendo il registro sereno e sdrammatizzante per definizione: quello del racconto per ragazzi.

Jean Rhys ha avuto l'idea di ricostruire la vita di una simile ombra labile e confusa prima dell'arrivo in Inghilterra. Una idea può essere buona o cattiva, anzi un'idea è in partenza provvisoriamente buona e cattiva. Risulterà essere più buona che cattiva, più cattiva che buona a seconda dell'esecuzione. Ora l'esecuzione di Jean Rhys è straordinaria, un romanzo avvelenato di fascino, squilibrato di passioni, condannato e riscattato dalla magia... Scacciata dal suo paradiso di Coulibri, Antoinette affronta un tragico e tumultuoso destino d'amore e follia proprio perché di tale tragicità e tumultuosità è convinta lei per prima. O, facciamo, per seconda. Per prima ne è convinta Jean Rhys che con mano implacabile e delicata, complice e spietata sospinge la sua eroina a bruciare e consumarsi nello straordinario romanzo che è II grande mare dei sargassi sino a ridursi all'ombra labile e confusa di un personaggio minore dello straordinario romanzo che è Jane Eyre di Charlotte Bronté.
